Internet Marketing

How Website Color Choice impacts on effective Internet Marketing. A guide to choosing colors that enhance the image and impression you wish to portray on your website.

I briefly touched on this subject in a previous e-book titled "The Forgotten Fundamentals of SEO" available at Web Design Australia and I have been asked by a few people to expand and explain more about the psychology of color and how it affects what you should be for your website from a marketing perspective.

The internet is the ultimate visual and psychological medium. It provides businesses with an unparalleled avenue to reach potential customers. In this visually engrossing world it is the copy, or words, on your website that have the greatest psychological impact on visitors and given this they become your most important communication and sales tool.

Another important psychological aspect of your website is the often over looked and definitely misunderstood marketing strategy of colors. The same as we use words and phrases to describe and express our intentions color can be used to convey similar messages in more subtle and concealed ways. As an example of a color being used to convey a feeling, when I was at University they painted the walls in the library a light pastel-pink color to try and enhance the studying environment. Did it work? I really don’t know, I was in the computer lab, but I am guessing that subliminally there was probably some impact whether it be physically measurable or not.

In the past choosing color schemes for websites used to be left up to the programmer who was responsible for just getting something up and running. Often there was no forethought or planning for real graphic design or image perception. "A simple site, nothing fancy". I am fairly certain that every web developer has been asked for something like this, I know I have. If you really want to succeed in 2007+ then this kind of website will just not work.

Given the competitive nature of the Internet market, there has been a steady influx of Internet marketing professionals who are looking to stamp their mark on the ever increasingly competitive keyword monopoly game. Every day there businesses employ Internet marketing agencies to employ their expert marketing strategies to their business. Often these are for huge fees. One area that I see getting missed during these expensive website makeovers is the psychology of color.

I believe it is important to address this marketing issue in design and ensure it the colors chosen are enhancing and supporting the overall theme and feel of the website in an effort to get the website visitor to perform the action we actually want them to do on our website; be it contact us on email, buy a product or feel comfortable browsing our articles and reading the news.

So what colors should we be incorporating into our website designs to ensure we convey the right message to our visitors? I have detailed a list of colors and their associated feelings and keywords so you can get an idea or what to put on your webpages.

RED is associated with love, passion, danger, warning, excitement, food, impulse, action, adventure.
BLUE is associated with trustworthiness, success, seriousness, calmness, power, professionalism.
GREEN is associated with money, nature, animals, health, healing, life, harmony.
ORANGE is associated with comfort, creativity, celebration, fun, youth, affordability.
PURPLE is associated with royalty, justice, ambiguity, uncertainty, luxury, fantasy, dreams.
WHITE is associated with innocence, purity, cleanliness, simplicity.
YELLOW is associated with curiosity, playfulness, cheerfulness, amusement.
PINK is associated with softness, sweetness, innocence, youthfulness, tenderness.
BROWN is associated with earth, nature, tribal, primitive, simplicity.
GREY is associated with neutralality, indifference, reserved.
BLACK is associated with seriousness, darkness, mystery, secrecy.

When choosing colors for your site it is important to employ contrasting or sympathetic and complementary color schemes. It is important to identify your market and ensure the psychological message you are trying to get across with the rest of your site design, words and images is complemented and enhanced by the appropriate color scheme. Often it can be wise to run samples of the same site with slightly differing colour schemes past a test audience and see which has the best impact or you can even run differing coloured sites to visitors and track conversions to your goals. Its really up to you how to try and test or track the impact of your psychological color message on your Internet Marketing.

Aggressive Internet Marketing

Aggressive internet marketing means full-blown marketing and promotions that exceed any businessman’s expectations. A business needs fierce internet marketing. No more, no less. But to make it low cost? Is that even possible? How can something so aggressive be affordable?

Luckily, you can avail of inexpensive aggressive internet marketing if you just look hard and good enough. Be keen and alert and know what’s going on in the online industry. The following questions will help you discern if your chosen internet site to do the marketing fits the bill.

1. Does the company offer free website design?

Even if you know your HTML, it is still more advisable if a professional team does it for you. Some internet marketing sites offer free web design to make sure that your site’s needs are met. It’s a must that marketing is integrated to the web design. If the company requires you to pay more than fifty bucks for the web design, then so much for straight-forward internet marketing! Look somewhere else!

2. How many keywords does your web site cater to?

Having too many keywords or key phrases to focus on will make your page ranking drop. Creating smaller web pages with content that emphasizes only a few keywords will serve Internet marketing endeavor better.

3. How search engine-compatible is your website?

Internet marketing is coined "aggressive" only if it is a hundred percent search engine-compatible. There are about 10 major search engines online and your site has to work accordingly with them. Find out if your internet marketing site is expert on search engine optimization.

4. Do you know your competitors?

Affordable aggressive internet marketing pushes your business forward by taking note of your competitors. Analysis and evaluation of the competition is mandatory to figure out your shortcomings and advantages over them. If this feature is excluded from your internet marketing plan, you’re getting a mediocre deal.

5. How efficient is the monthly marketing plan?

Usually, you’re asked to pay a monthly fee for the marketing plan. For a marketing plan to be efficient, it must zero in on the following things: webpage development, link exchanges, web content, updates and technical support. Of course, also included are the standard SEO, competition analysis and keyword density.

If you’ve procured the right answers for the previous questions, then you can finally say: "Now that’s low cost aggressive internet marketing."

Search Engine Marketing

This article breaks down SEM into simple, easy to understand language.

Anyone selling online should consider search engine marketing (SEM) as a way of generating potential customers to their website. But what does this unique kind of marketing involve? In this article, I’ll explain a few search engine basics…

For most Internet users it’s virtually second nature to use a search engine to look for information, products or services. As expected, when they search on a particular word or combinations of words, the search engines come up with a host of results. Each result represents a website that supposedly has the information, products or services the Internet user looking for. They can click on the link and ta-da! the website does or does not give them what they want.

It’s important to note that the search engines don’t rank websites as a whole; they rank specific webpages. In any case, the higher that your webpages appear in the SERPs, the more people who are likely to see your description and click on your link. However, SEM experts tend to vary in their view on whether it’s better to have the top position in both or either the free and paid results. While most believe that having the top rank in the free results attracts the most clicks and traffic; some SEM experts believe that it’s more cost-effective to have the second, third or lower listing in the paid results. Nevertheless, most agree that you want your free and/or paid results to be on the first page.

The two main strands of search marketing are search engine optimization (SEO) and paid search. Search engine optimization is about optimizing your website (i.e. each page on the site) - known as "on-page optimization" - as well as undertaking a range of "off-page" activities designed to achieve a high ranking in the SERPs. Getting a high ranking in the SERPs of a given search engine is a function of how that search engine’s mathematical algorithm (i.e. for determining rankings) works. Often this takes a degree of study, trial and error, and hard work.

Alternatively, to achieve a high place in the paid search results, it’s largely a matter of how much you’re willing to pay. Depending on the search engine, you can pay per click - known literally as pay-per-click (PPC) advertising - or pay based on the number of impressions or views the ad receives. Having said that, the priority of your placing may also be impacted by how effective your ad is, based on the number of clicks it receives or click through rate (CTR). Google, in particular, takes the CTR into account, as well as the bid price per click, when determining the order of the paid results.

It can be a good idea to dip your toe into search marketing by starting with paid advertising - particularly PPC. Not only can you begin promoting your offer to your target market without delay, but you can also test keywords. You might decide that particularly high performing keywords should be incorporated into your webpages for SEO purposes.

So there you have a quick run-down of search engine marketing. It’s definitely worth delving into further if you like the idea of building a consistent traffic stream to your web business.

Influential Internet Marketers

This article is Part 2 of a subjective list of the ten most influential Internet marketers. Like in part 1, I could have easily included more than ten marketers, but I had to draw the line somewhere. So, once again, if you don’t see your favorite Internet marketer on the list, please don’t be offended. I purposely excluded individuals who are known primarily for one particular talent. For example: Copywriting and SEO.

Instead, I wanted to sing the praises of those individuals whom are known as great marketers - first and foremost. And while this list is subjective, it would be extremely difficult for anyone to argue against any of the selections included on the list, as they are all proven excellent and have stood the proverbial test of time.

I have to admit, I caught quite a bit of flak, because I didn’t include Perry Marshall on my list in Part 1. This time around, he tops my list.

1. Perry Marshall helps companies grow sales and eliminate waste with highly targeted web traffic, marketing and publicity.

How? By helping clients develop automated sales & marketing processes. The integration of timeless direct marketing principles with 21st century media and technology produces astonishing results.

He also helps companies who sell sophisticated products & services quickly and predictably acquire new customers - without the humiliation of competing only on the basis of price.

Perry Marshall also publishes information on state-of-the-art marketing methods for company owners, managers, marketers and sales people, as well as providing training, seminars and coaching based on experience and proven methods.

To my knowledge, Perry Marshall is the first marketer to publish a book about Google AdWords.

His "Definitive Guide to Google AdWords," which is considered by many to be the bible of the various Adwords publications on the market, helps you to improve click rates, understand which words to use for match-types, lower advertising expenses and thereby increase your overall total returns on your pay-per-click advertisements.

Perry Marshall is an engineering graduate who drifted into sales. Among other things, Marshall designed speakers for Advent, Acura, Ford, Honda, Mazda and Chrysler when he worked at Jensen from 1993-1995.

2. Willie Crawford’s rise to the top is legendary. Willie Crawford was a poor black child who overcame welfare, mental limitations from within and cultural limitations from around him, to become one of Internet marketing’s ultimate good-guys and heroes. He began by selling cookbooks on the Internet, then teaching others to develop their own products and build successful online businesses. Willie’s products include electronic books, several print books, audio and videotapes, DVDs, live internet marketing workshops featuring top speakers from across the U.S., and many other items.

Today, Willie Crawford is an Internet marketing legend, corporate president, published author, seminar speaker and host, tele-seminar speaker and host, retired military officer, karate black belt, network marketing trainer, and lifetime student of marketing. In addition to having written and published a best-selling cookbook, "Soul Food Recipes Learned On a North Carolina Tobacco Farm," and a best-selling inspirational biography, "Git Off The Porch,"Willie has written over 250 articles on building a successful Internet-based or home-based business.

Willie’s now uses his marketing expertise to help develope massive enterprises such as television shows and building homeless shelters (through White Dove Press, LLC, where he’s Senior Executive Vice President).

3. Shelley Lowery: Before launching her Internet career, Shelley Lowery was employed by Worthington Industries, a Fortune 500 company, where she was a "Production Scheduling Coordinator." That’s where she discovered her true passion for business and computers.

She quit her job in 1995, after ten years of employment, to pursue her dreams and launch her full time Internet business. She has been through all of the trials and errors of web design and development, Internet marketing and promotion, writing a weekly publication and running a full time Internet business and now shares her experience with her visitors.

Shelley’s articles have appeared in hundreds of electronic and print publications including Microsoft Direct Access, Internet Magazine, SiteProNews, Jayde WebProNews, Active Internet Marketer and many more.

Web-Source.net is owned and maintained by Shelley Lowery, President of Brajusta Publishing, Inc., a direct marketing company located in Lewis Center, Ohio, specializing in providing instructional electronic books, software and publications.

4. Michael Wong is an internationally recognized internet marketing expert, and the author of a leading SEO book, numerous marketing tips, and reviews of marketing tools and ecommerce software. Michael’s impressive accomplishments include:

* Starting one of his first web sites for less than $500, back in 1998. his company was acquired 18 months later for a "considerable" sum by iBoost Technology, which was backed by SoftBank; the same venture capitalists that funded the likes of Yahoo! and ETrade.

This service (due to a powerful Viral Marketing "twist") became one of the Top 500 sites in the world for web traffic in only 10 months after it was launched. This little service used to consistently produce in excess of $100K/month in affiliate commissions from a variety of affiliate programs. Not bad for a service that John created for less than $350.

During the past 7 years, John has been actively involved with eBay. What started out as just an entertaining way to buy things, quickly turned into a lucrative business. John steadily became an expert at using eBay and figured out many strategies for producing profit from their site on a consistent basis. He recently produced a DVD training product to teach others how to start and run a successful eBay business from home.

Internet Marketing

Attorneys are vulnerable to getting poor results and paying high prices because they are not educated consumers when it comes to law firm Internet marketing. Learn all you need to know to be on top of the Internet marketing game. This series is an executive briefing on Law Firm Internet Marketing in four parts. This is Part 2.

You mentioned "…your page ranking." What is page ranking and how do I get my pages ranked in law firm Internet marketing?

You don’t have to do anything to get your web pages ranked in law firm Internet marketing. It happens when the search engines send their spiders out to read your site. Google Page Rank is the standard on the Internet for success since 47% of the people on the Internet go to Google to do their searching and the other major search engines (Yahoo and MSN) use similar models as Google. If you rank high at Google you will rank high anywhere. The Google Page Rank system is from 0 to 10 with 10 being high and 0 being low. Probably more than 98% of sites on the Internet are ranked 0, 1, or 2. I do recommend you go to Google and get a Google Tool Bar since then you can see the Google Page Rank they have given you and every other webpage you ever visit. This is a very useful tool in law firm Internet marketing. First it tells you how you are doing with your website.

Next it tells you how well your competitors are doing with their websites, which tells you what you need to do to get a higher Google Page Rank so you are above them in the search engine results. Finally, it tells you how well your vendor has done for you in law firm Internet marketing and if you are searching for a new vendor it can tell you if they know what they are doing since they should show you sites they have built that have good Google Page Ranks. For sure that vendor’s site should have a good Google Page Rank don’t you think?

There is another ranking system called Alexa that is not one you need to be as aware of based on Alexa toolbar users (well over 10 million of them last I knew) and where they are going. You can get their toolbar at Alexa.com. Alexa ranking is based on the lowest number being the best and the highest number being the worst. A low number is under 500,000 thus indicating a website that is in the top 1% of all websites in the world in terms of the traffic that comes to their site. For example CNN.com is #26, GE.com is 4,719, Google is #3, Yahoo is #1 and MSN is #2. The poor Alexa ranks are in the millions with most websites on the Internet being Alexa ranked "no data" not being at all unusual. You site is likely to be "no data" ranked, as are most lawyer sites by far. So be more concerned about your Google Rank.

You have been talking about "competitors" a lot. Who are my competitors in law firm Internet marketing?

Your competitors in law firm Internet marketing are those people who are trying to rank high at the search engines for the same keywords as you are trying to rank high on. If your down the street lawyer competitor knows nothing about keyword research and how to build a law firm Internet marketing system then he will not be much of a competitor for you on the Internet. Fortunately or unfortunately most lawyers are doing it all wrong with vendors who are over charging and under delivering. You have a great opportunity to get out in front of the pack and stay there because by the time they wake up you will be so far out in front they almost certainly won’t be able to catch you in law firm Internet marketing.

Some way back you mentioned "RSS". What is RSS in law firm Internet marketing?

RSS stands for "Really Simple Syndication". Trying to stay up with all the new information on the Internet is clearly difficult given the size and growth of the Internet. What if you had a really simple way to get the new information posted at your favorite websites or get their newsletters without them getting caught in spam filters? That is what RSS is designed to do. You sign up on the web site of one of your favorites for RSS and they will send information (text, audio or video) to your RSS news reader on your computer or to your web based news reader (I use Yahoo.com).

While this technology is still new it is growing. Some Internet marketing experts think it will overtake email as the "killer application" on the Internet in a few years since it fixes the spam problem and reduces the number of newsletters coming to people’s inboxes. It is good but probably not that good. Right now I would put it on your site as a useful tool in law firm Internet marketing if you offer a newsletter or add content regularly since people who use RSS are going to be very interested prospects if they sign up on your site using RSS.

You said earlier "over charging and under delivering." What should I expect to spend on an Internet marketing site with a vendor that can deliver excellent results?

You may or may not have to "start over" if you have a site now. Also know some vendors charge by the hour, some by the project and some a mixture of the two. If you are looking for a "value vendor" (one who is not the cheapest but also not the most expensive) to build a new website with all of the factors I have spoken about in place you will need to expect to spend from $12,000 to $15,000 for the new website. At this level of spending the website should have 20 pages or maybe a few more in total with the entire "on site" SEO in place. The fee for the site should include the services of a Webmaster (think of this person as being much like a "general contractor" who is building your dream house), keyword researcher, web designer, technician, and website copywriter. If you are looking for someone who is going to do the ongoing webmaster role (think here of having a professional Internet marketer on you team) taking you from where you are now with an existing site to excellent results then work with you ongoing to assess your current website circumstances in detail, make a plan for how to improve your circumstances via your current vendor, manage your current vendor so they implement that plan (or if necessary make the recommendation to you to leave your current vendor as well as find you another more appropriate vendor) you can expect to pay around $70 to $90 per hour to get a quality USA based person to do the job for you.

Feel free to contact me and I will spend 20 minutes with you by telephone (no selling or pitching allowed - and I don’t sell websites by the way) with my compliments. Go to my website and click on the contact me tab for how to schedule the call.

That is more than I expected to spend on law firm Internet marketing. Are there other options?

Yes. If you don’t currently want to budget for $12,000 to $15,000 you could begin with a 10 to 15 page site but be sure to do the keyword research (Richard Cannon can do this for you and is a master at it, one of the other SBI Certified Webmasters or maybe your current vendor). The lower number of pages would bring the cost down considerably. Later you can add pages (a must in law firm Internet marketing - like a page per month for solo and small firms). You could also go to guru.com (a virtual marketplace complete with a mediated process) where you can find cheap vendors (think India, Singapore, New Zealand, South Africa and Europeans here at $12 to $50 per hour) as well as value vendors (think $50 to $100 per hour in the USA). If all you want is a "brochure holder" type of site (so you don’t look behind the times) you can get one of those built without the keyword research for maybe as little as $800 to $1,000 by a value vendor or half that or less by a "cheap vendor", however, you will likely "throw that away" when you decide to move up to law firm Internet marketing type site. If you really, really want to go inexpensive you could go to Yahoo.com’s home page and scroll down on the left side of the page to "small business" and click on that where you can buy something as a decent brochure holder type of site at a cheap price per month.

OK friends, we have completed part two on law firm Internet marketing. In part three we will cover should you have a vendor that has done lawyers websites in the past over a "plain" vendor, why do I keep mentioning the number of pages on a site, how to avoid overpriced vendors, what your domain name should be, intellectual property issues to consider and more. So keep on reading with part three to learn more on law firm Internet marketing.
